About Cisco 900 Series Integrated Service Routers

1.     The new Cisco 900 Series Integrated Services Routers (ISRs) combine Internet access, comprehensive security, and wireless services (LTE Advanced 3.0, Wireless WAN and Wireless LAN) in a single high-performance device that is easy to deploy and manage.

2.     Cisco 900 Series ISRs are well suited for deployment as Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) in enterprise small branch offices and in service provider managed-service environments.

The Cisco 900 Series ISRs deliver integrated security and threat defense, protecting networks from both known and new Internet vulnerabilities and attacks.
These powerful, fixed-configuration routers provide secure broadband and Metro Ethernet connectivity. Service providers offering managed Ethernet WAN services can deploy them in customer locations as CPE. Centralized and remote management capabilities are available through web-based tools and Cisco IOS Software for full visibility and control of network configurations at the remote site.
The 900 Series ISRs simplify the deployment of Ethernet WAN services, with end-to-end Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OA&M), Service-Level Agreement (SLA) monitoring and verification, and configuration management.
The Cisco 900 Series ISRs come with a 4-port managed switch, providing LAN ports to connect multiple devices.

Q&A: LAN Base in 2960X Switches?

A question from a user: “Which license do Cisco 2960X or 2960XR supported for ‘Layer 3 features with routed access (Open Shortest Path First [OSPF]), static routing, and Routing Information Protocol (RIP)’”

LAN Base is a powerful license for layer 2 access switches. Its broad range of access features covers all LAN Lite capabilities plus more robust features such as VTPv3 and FlexLinks. VTP version 3 offers better administrative control over VLAN topology information sharing to reduce unintended or disruptive changes. It also adds more VLAN environment support including expanded ISL VLAN support range. FlexLinks increase Layer 2 resiliency by adding a pair of fast converging active and backup links between access and distribution switches.
LAN Base allows layer 3 routing by adding static routing support. Many strong security capabilities are added in LAN Base, too. Examples include Flexible Authentication, Radius Change of Authorization and advanced 802.1X features.
On the management side, a long list of capabilities becomes available in LAN Base including a wider range of MIBs, Ingress policing, Trust Boundary, AutoQoS, and DSCP mapping. Here is compare: https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/lan/catalyst3750x_3560x/software/release/15-0_2_se/configuration/guide/3750x_cg/swintro.pdf

Q. What Cisco IOS Software feature sets are supported in Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches?
A. The Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series come with a common universal image and supports LAN Lite, LAN Base, and IP Lite feature sets, as shown in Table 1.
Table1. Feature sets supported in the 2960-X Series

Q. What features does IP Lite bring to the 2960-XR switch models?
A. IP Lite introduced enterprise access Layer 3 features to the 2960-XR switch models. IP Lite is subset of IP Base features. Some of the IP Lite features are:
●   Routing Information Protocol (RIP) v1
●   Routing Information Protocol (RIP) v2
●   Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) v2 stub
●   Open Shortest Path First (OSPF) v3 stub
●   Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) stub
●   Equal-cost routing
●   Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP)
●   Protocol Independent Multicast PIM (Sparse Mode, Dense Mode, Sparse Dense Mode, Source Specific Multicast) stub
●   Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) for IPv4
●   Private VLAN
●   IPv6 First Hop Security source guard
●   Per-VLAN and per-port policers

Q. Do I need a software license for the Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches?
A. No. Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series Switches use the Universal image, but no license is required. The feature set is bound to the hardware model type and cannot be changed. For convenience, a single software image is used for all Cisco Catalyst 2960-X and 2960-XR switches, regardless of whether they are IP Lite, LAN Base, or LAN Lite models.

Q. Can a Cisco Catalyst 2960-X Series Switch feature set license be upgraded?
A. No. The feature set is bound to the hardware model. To get the features and capabilities of IP Lite, you must purchase an IP Lite (2960-XR) switch.
So, 2960-X cannot support IP Lite functions, you must use a 2960-XR with IP Lite image.

New Cisco Nexus 400G Switches-Models

Cisco launched new 400G Ethernet switches.
The new 400G Ethernet switches fall into two camps, two boxes in the Nexus 9000 family aimed at large-enterprise network customers and two in the 3400-S class targeted at high-bandwidth hyperscale users.
These switches pave the way for Terabit Ethernet switching to become a mainstream technology, wrote Thomas Scheiberote, Cisco vice president of product management, Data Center Networking.
Cisco says 400G will let webscale customers, data-center and 5G-mobile operators create more powerful networks more cost-effectively while offering customers with four times the bandwidth and scale of current networks.
The bandwidth and scale needed for 400G is evident, because:
  • There will be 20 billion to 30 billion online IoT devices in the world through this decade.
  • Users will own more than 25 million 5G-capable devices by 2021 and more than 80 percent of all IP traffic will be bandwidth-hungry, latency-sensitive video content.
  • By 2021 hyperscale data centers will grow from 338 in number at the end of 2016 to 628, representing 53 percent of all installed data-center servers by 2021.
Enterprise users may be most interested in the two new Nexus 9300GX boxes, which Cisco says expand its overarching Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) and its intent-based networking data-center designs, which in real time can identify and react to changing network conditions.
ACI brings with it support for Cisco products such as the Tetration Analytics platform, which collects all manner of telemetry information from Cisco and non-Cisco devices on the network. The system then uses machine learning and behavior analysis to provide network administrators a greater understanding and control of their data-center resources.

Machine-to-Machine (M2M)

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) is a technology that aggregates the intercommunications between machines without human intervention.

This technology is already used in a wide range of devices such as vending machines, surveillance systems and sensor-equipped measuring instruments; and its adoption is expected to continue at an accelerated pace. The most important elements for network devices offering the M2M technology are compactness, mobility and durability.

In the case of vending machines, for example, the network device needs to be compact to allow installation inside the machines. Mobility is also important as it is cheaper to use the mobile 4G network than installing a wired broadband line for each vending machine. Depending on the installation location, the network device must also have the durability to withstand the high temperatures in summer.

Cisco 819H/G/HG has been developed to address these issues. Both models feature a palm-sized compact chassis and are compatible with 4G LTE 2.0 wireless LAN. Furthermore, Cisco 819H/HG can operate in temperatures between -23 and +60 deg C and in up to 95% humidity and have superior vibration and impact resistance to withstand industrial use. A wide variety of mounting options are supported including DIN rail, floor and wall mounting.
